I just bought a cheap USB foot switch, and when I plug it in, no extra device shows up in my input control panel. Pressing it enters the letter 'b'. What I want to do is simply have some sort of control that will affect it and not my main keyboard. I just want to be able to choose what key it enters. For example, I'd like to have it enter an arrow key for page turning or space bar to start and stop recording…I'm using Mint 12 KDE.

SOLVED! Just have to run the setup software in Windows and the settings stay permanent.
My pedal was under $10 and the three-pedal version is only $20.
