On Windows operating systems, the ipconfig utility is used to get different information about the current TCP/IP protocol settings, release or renew the IP address assigned from a DHCP server, etc. This is one of the most common utilities for troubleshooting network connection problems in Windows (as well as ping, net, netstat,
In this article, we will show how to get information about the current IP address of a computer using the ipconfig utility, how to obtain an IP address from the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server or release it.
Ipconfig Command /all: Display the full TCP/IP configuration information for all network adapters. /release: Release the IPv4 address for the specified adapter. /release6: Release the IPv6 address for the specified adapter. /renew: Renew the IPv4 address for the specified adapter. /renew6: Renew the IPv6 address for the specified adapter.
To get current TCP/IP configuration of the local interface of the computer, including the IP address, subnet mask, gateway IP address, DNS servers IP addresses, domain suffix, open a command prompt as an administrator and run the command:
- Ipconfig is a MS-DOS command-line tool used to display and manage the network settings of your computer. Ipconfig is available on Windows machines, and it displays the current network connection details and DHCP client settings.
- At the command prompt, run the following commands in the listed order, and then check to see if that fixes your connection problem: Type netsh winsock reset and press Enter. Type netsh int ip reset and press Enter. Type ipconfig /release and press Enter. Type ipconfig /renew and press Enter. Type ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter.
- The ipconfig command: The default information that this tool will show you will be the following: The IP address, The subnet mask; The default gateway. The information will be shown for each adapter that is bound to TCP/IP. This is an example of ipconfig default output.

An example of the displayed network adapter configuration:
It also provides information about each network adapter installed in the system, as well as information about the DHCP service (and DHCP server) or about static IP addressing.
In this example, you can see that the current IP address for the network adapter Ethernet adapter Ethernet0 (Intel(R) 82574L Gigabit Network Connection): 192.168.72.1.
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.72.1(Preferred)
The fact that this network adapter is allowed to obtain the dynamic IP address from a DHCP server is indicated by the line:
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Please note that the address is assigned by the DHCP server 192.168.72.254.
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.72.254
The Lease Obtained field indicates the time of obtaining this dynamic IP address from a DHCP server, Lease Expires—the expiration date of the lease.
Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Wednesday, March 6, 2019 7:42:01 AM

To release the IP settings of all network adapters of the computer, use the command:
When executing this command, the client sends a DHCPRELEASE packet to the DHCP server, indicating that the client no longer needs to use its network address. All active TCP/IP connections for all network adapters are terminated and the client release the IP address (the computer is disconnected from the Internet in this time).
Or you can reset the IP address for a specific network adapter only. If the adapter name contains spaces, its name must be specified in quotes. You can also use wildcards * and ?. For example:
In order to renew IP Address from DHCP server you need to run the command:
As with the release option, ipconfig /renew can accept the optional attribute—the name of the network connection.
Both the /renew and /release options work only on clients configured to automatically obtain dynamic IP addresses from a DHCP server (this could be your router or ISP equipment). Updating the IP address will usually resolve problems connecting to a new network or a new router.
In various scripts or when connecting remotely via RDP, you can use the following one-liner to release and renew the IP address for all network adapters:

ipconfig
(standing for 'Internet Protocol configuration') is a console application program of some computer operating systems that displays all current TCP/IP network configuration values and refreshes Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Domain Name System (DNS) settings.[1]
Implementations[edit]
The command is available in Microsoft Windows, ReactOS, and in ApplemacOS. The ReactOS version was developed by Ged Murphy and is licensed under the GPL.[2]
Microsoft Windows, ReactOS[edit]
The ipconfig
command supports the command-line switch/all
. This results in more detailed information than ipconfig
alone.
An important additional feature of ipconfig
is to force refreshing of the DHCP IP address of the host computer to request a different IP address. This is done using two commands in sequence. First, ipconfig /release
is executed to force the client to immediately give up its lease by sending the server a DHCP release notification which updates the server's status information and marks the old client's IP address as 'available'. Then, the command ipconfig /renew
is executed to request a new IP address.[3][4] Where a computer is connected to a cable or DSL modem, it may have to be plugged directly into the modem network port to bypass the router, before using ipconfig /release
and turning off the power for a period of time, to ensure that the old IP address is taken by another computer.[5]
The /flushdns
parameter can be used to clear the Domain Name System (DNS) cache to ensure future requests use fresh DNS information by forcing hostnames to be resolved again from scratch.[6]
Apple macOS[edit]
ipconfig
in Mac OS X serves as a wrapper to the IPConfiguration agent, and can be used to control the Bootstrap Protocol and DHCP client from the command-line interface.[7] Like most Unix-based operating systems, Mac OS X also uses ifconfig
for more direct control over network interfaces, such as configuring static IP addresses. The Ifconfig command in Linux has been replaced by the IP command
